چکیده

While the high-z frontier of star formation rate (SFR) studies has advanced rapidly, direct measurements beyond z ∼ 4 remain difficult, as shown by significant disagreements among different results. Gamma-ray bursts, owing to their brightness and association with massive stars, offer hope of clarifying this situation, provided that the GRB rate can be properly related to the SFR. The Swift GRB data reveal an increasing evolution in the GRB rate relative to the SFR at intermediate z; taking this into account, we use the highestz GRB data to make a new determination of the SFR at z = 4 − 7. Our results exceed the lowest direct SFR measurements, and imply that no steep drop exists in the SFR up to at least z ∼ 6.5. We discuss the implications of our result for cosmic reionization, the efficiency of the universe in producing stellar-mass black holes, and “GRB feedback” in star-forming hosts. Gamma Ray Bursts as Probes of the First Stars

The redshift where the first stars formed is an important and unknown milestone in cosmological structure formation. The evidence linking gamma ray bursts (GRBs) with star formation activity implies that the first GRBs occurred shortly after the first stars formed. Gamma ray bursts and their afterglows may thus offer a unique probe of this epoch, because they are bright from gamma ray to radio ...

Redshift distribution of gamma-ray bursts and star formation rate

Aims. The redshift distribution of gamma-ray bursts collected in the BATSE Catalog is compared with the star formation rate. We aim to clarify the accordance between them. We also study the case of comoving number density of bursts monotonously increasing up to redshift (6−20). Methods. A method independent of the models of the gamma-ray bursts is used. The short and the long subgroups are stud...

High-redshift gamma-ray bursts: observational signatures of superconducting cosmic strings?

The high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), GRBs 080913 and 090423, challenge the conventional GRB progenitor models by their short durations, typical for short GRBs, and their high energy releases, typical for long GRBs. Meanwhile, the GRB rate inferred from high-redshift GRBs also remarkably exceeds the prediction of the collapsar model, with an ordinary star formation history. We show that al...

The Expected Redshift Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts

We predict the redshift distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) assuming that they trace the cosmic star formation history. We find that a fraction ∼> 50% of all GRBs on the sky originate at a redshift z ∼> 5, even though the fraction of the total stellar mass formed by z ∼ 5 is only ∼ 15%. These two fractions are significantly different because they involve different cosmological factors when ...

The Birthplaces of Gamma-Ray Bursts

We use population synthesis to construct distributions of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) for different proposed progenitor models. We use a description of star formation that takes into account the evolution of metallicity with redshift and galaxy mass, the evolution of galaxy mass with redshift, and the star formation rate with galaxy mass and redshift. We compare predicted distributions with redshif...
